PEK or PKX into the Third Ring

Beijing's transport challenge is less about distance and more about access. Both airports sit a long way from the centre: PEK is half an hour to the CBD on a clear motorway, PKX closer to fifty minutes given it is forty-six kilometres south. The drive itself is straightforward. What catches foreign visitors is the layer underneath. Didi needs a Chinese phone number tied to a Chinese payment method. Google Maps is unreliable. Rental cars are restricted by tail-number bans on certain days. You can be standing at PKX arrivals with a working visa and no working way to get into the city.
